Paraquat is a widely used herbicide in America, killing weeds and grasses on farmland with the intent of allowing the crops to flourish. It is also shown in many scientific studies to cause Parkinson's disease.
How dangerous is paraquat?
The US Environmental Protection Agency, the EPA, describes the chemical on its web page with the warning, "ONE SIP CAN KILL!". And coming into contact with just a few drops of the chemical can cause numerous and harmful medical problems.
How are people exposed to paraquat?
Most people are contaminated by direct contact with it as a farm worker or someone who sprays the chemical. However, people who live near farm fields can be exposed to paraquat through the air, water or even soil. In states with large agricultural production, the number of people possibly exposed is quite large.
What is Paraquat?
Paraquat dichloride (paraquat) is the active ingredient in products with brand names such as Gramoxone, Helmquat, Firestorm and Parazone, along with others. The chemical was first commercially used in 1961 and is still commonly used around the world - though it is banned in most of Europe. It is used to kill weeds and grasses, particularly on farms - while not damaging crops that are modified to be immune from the chemical. Some of the crops where paraquat may be used include rice, strawberries, beans and potatoes. It can also be used on cotton to help with breaking down the plant before harvest.
